“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all” – Helen Keller
This was a tough list to compress into just five and this certainly does not mean that the rest are terrible, just what appealed to me the most.
The Long Way Round:
This epic series sees Ewan McGregor and Charle Boorman ride from London to New York, the long way round!
Along with their camera man Claudio Von Planta they travelled via western and central Europe on through to Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia and Canada, a distance of 30,396 kms!
Riding on their BMW bikes, the close friends come across a multitude of difficulties and challenges from crossing swollen rivers, dues to broken bridges to riding along the road of bones to Magadan they travel across 12 countries.
While they did mostly stay in hotels while riding through Europe and North America the boys spent many nights camping under the stars in places like Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
This 10 part series highlighted the work done by UNICEF as well as inspiring a generation of riders across the world.
One of my favourite travel series, 3 guys, Scott Wilson and Justin Lukach, who starred along with Andre Dupuis behind the camera travel across the world and have created 3 seasons of wonderful travel content who focus on the journey as much as the destination itself.
They began with a road trip across Canada, their home country, before embarking on their adventure across the world, the most notable locations being Antarctica, Mongolia and north Korea.
They were nominated and had won several awards between 2008 and 2010.
Tales by Light:
An Australian travel documentary series which follows a different photographer each episode as they travel the world in search of that perfect photograph.
Each photographer focuses on a specific subject that they hold dear.
This might be a sow about photographers however this show is about a lot more than just that. It appeals to a more broader audience, whether you are an aspiring photographer or just a travel enthusiast.
One of the most appealing aspects about this show is how exciting it is from exploding volcanoes to african tribes with beautiful traditions.
If you are at a loss in terms of travel inspiration or just looking for your next destination, Tales by light will definitely inspire you to walk out that for and start exploring he world.
Jack Whitehall’s travels with my father:
Definitely a more bizarre turn in terms of just conventional travel shows but this one is just too good a show to pass up!
Jack, a standup comedian and actor takes his dad, Michael, who is a more old fashioned traveler, on travels to different countries where adventures and comedy ensures!
With 3 seasons all available on Netflix in the bag and travels across Asia, Europe and most recently America, this barrel of laughs/ road trip shows the lighter side of travel, this show is a must watch.
In addition to all of that it is also a heartwarming watch as it brings them together throughout the show, which goes to show that putting a smart mouthed son and a grumpy old dad together does not only guarantee comedy but emotion as well.
Ever heard of the term Dark Tourist and scratched your head questioningly?
Well then this show belongs on your list as it sets out to explore the darker side of tourism. From atrocities to disasters and war zones, a dark tourist is someone who is willing to risk bodily harm to explore dangerous places.
David Farrier travels to unconventional destinations to try and get in the mind of a dark tourist. Having 8 episodes on Netflix so far David travels across several countries around the globe such as places like Fukushima and the suicide first in Japan to Indonesia where in certain parts of the country they dig up their dead for ceremonies
